Summit Community Center opens to serve those in need

Wednesday, August 19, 2026

When we opened the doors to the new Summit Community Center, there was already a line outside.

The building is bright, welcoming and thoughtfully designed. More importantly, it reflects our belief that every person deserves to be treated with dignity and respect when seeking assistance. Guests can access food and essential items in a setting that feels organized, comfortable and inviting while being able to meet with on-site case managers who connect individuals and families to resources that support long-term stability and well-being.

What makes the Summit Community Center especially exciting is that it was built to be more than a service site. It was designed to be a gathering place.

As director of food pantries for Catholic Charities, I’m proud of the new pantry space where guests are guided individually through a selection of items with the assistance of the Albertine Sisters, staff and volunteers.

I’m excited guests get to come in and see a more vibrant, open space — it’s organized and laid out well. The clients come in with smiles on their faces because they see smiles on our faces because we are so excited about the new Summit Community Center. This is more of a grocery store setup and it’s absolutely beautiful. I love it.

The pantry is filled with shelf-stable foods, as well as chicken, ground beef, fish, fresh fruits and produce. It feels good that clients can think about meal preparation while they shop here.

Case management services are also available on weekdays at the Summit Community Center, where on-site case managers provide information and resources to those in need.

On Wednesdays, staff and volunteers use the new commercial kitchen to serve a hot community meal at 5 p.m. — inviting nourishment and companionship.

This is where I hope people will find some peace and comfort. This community center is so spacious, well-lit and warm. We’ll have the television on, host some community events, have the younger kids play in the kids’ corner, and our guests can have a chance to relax.
